Frequently Asked Questions

JSA (Job Safety Analysis) and JHA (Job Hazard Analysis) are essentially the same document. Both break a task into steps, identify hazards at each step, and define control measures. Different companies and regions use different terms, but the process is identical.

The JSA should be prepared by the supervisor or foreman who understands the task, reviewed by the safety team, and signed by every crew member performing the work. It should be completed before the task begins and reviewed again if conditions change.

Each step should be specific enough to identify unique hazards but not so detailed that the JSA becomes unwieldy. Typically 5-12 steps per task. If a task needs more than 15 steps, consider breaking it into separate JSAs.
