Frequently Asked Questions

A hot work permit is required before any operation that produces sparks, flame, or heat that could ignite combustible materials. This includes welding, cutting, brazing, soldering, grinding, and using open flames. OSHA 1926.352 and NFPA 51B outline the requirements.

Most hot work permits are valid for a single shift or a maximum of 24 hours. Work that extends beyond the permit period requires a new permit. The template tracks permit start and end times with automatic expiration flagging.

A trained fire watch must be present during hot work and for at least 30 minutes after completion (60 minutes per NFPA 51B). The fire watch must have a fire extinguisher, know how to use it, and have the authority to stop work. This template tracks fire watch assignments and post-work monitoring.
