The GanttChart

Bars on a calendar, links between them, the critical path lit. It is how a thousand-line CPM schedule becomes something a room full of people can read at a glance.

Definition

A Gantt chart is the horizontal bar-chart view of a project schedule: each activity is a bar placed by its start and finish dates, with dependencies drawn between them and the critical path usually highlighted. It is the most common way to read a CPM schedule. Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project are the dominant tools that produce them; P6 exchanges schedules through the XER file format and MS Project through XML, which is how a schedule moves between systems.

The schedule you can actually read

Each activity is a bar on the calendar; the critical ones are highlighted and a link shows the dependency. The same data the CPM network reasons about, drawn so anyone can follow it.

How a schedule travels

A schedule is built in one tool and read by everyone else, so it moves as an exchange file. These are the formats that carry it.

Primavera P6XERYes
Microsoft ProjectXML exportYes
Microsoft Project.mpp (native binary)Export to XML first

How POD renders your Gantt

POD reads a Primavera P6 schedule exported as XER, or a Microsoft Project schedule exported as XML, and renders a Gantt of the activities and the critical path the scheduling tool computed, with each activity’s float read alongside, placed next to the daily reports and the rest of the project record. The native .mpp binary is not read directly in POD’s environment, so Project schedules come in as an XML export. POD renders and reads the schedule the tool produced; it does not run the Critical Path Method itself. The value is seeing the Gantt in the same place as the field status, so a slip in the field is read against the bar it affects.

Frequently asked questions

The bars are driven by the logic beneath

Every bar’s position comes from the critical-path logic. To read a Gantt well is to know which bars have zero float and which have room.
