What are the most important construction safety KPIs?▾

Lagging metrics tell you what already happened; leading metrics predict what is coming. The most useful dashboards pair both, so you can compare outcomes against the strength of the controls behind them.
What is a good TRIR for construction?▾
The construction industry average TRIR is roughly 2.4. Top-quartile contractors run below 2.0, and best-in-class safety programs push under 1.0. TRIR = (recordable incidents × 200,000) ÷ total hours worked, where 200,000 represents 100 full-time employees working a year.
Why is the near-miss reporting rate a leading indicator?▾
Because near-misses are incidents that almost happened. A high reporting rate signals a workforce that trusts the system enough to flag hazards without fear of blame, and every reported near-miss is a chance to fix a hazard before it injures someone. Contractors who drive this number up see recordables fall over the following 12 to 18 months.
How does EMR affect what work I can win?▾
EMR is your insurance experience multiplier: 1.00 is average, below 1.00 means fewer claims than expected. Many owners and general contractors set an EMR ceiling, often 1.0, as a hard prequalification gate. A lower EMR both lowers your premium and unlocks the projects you are allowed to bid.
