PersonalProtective Equipment

Head to foot, worn correctly or not at all. The last line of defense is only as strong as the rate it is actually worn.

Definition

Personal protective equipment, PPE, is equipment worn on the body, a hard hat, eye and ear protection, gloves, boots, hi-vis clothing, fall protection, to reduce the risk of a hazard that cannot be removed or engineered out of the task. It sits at the bottom of the hierarchy of controls: the last line of defense, not the first, which is why PPE compliance is measured and inspected rather than assumed.

Seven items, one compliance rate

Each inspection checks the same body-coverage list; the rate is simply how often every item on it was found correct.

The last rung, not the first

The hierarchy of controls ranks PPE below removing, substituting, or engineering a hazard away. It protects the individual, not the site.

PPE requirements are typically set in the task's job hazard analysis and reinforced in the day's toolbox talk.

How POD reads PPE compliance

POD reads PPE inspection counts and compliance from your safety records, gated to real data. POD surfaces what you report; it does not perform the inspections.
