Toolbox Talk &Pre-Task Plan

A few minutes before the first task, every shift. The cheapest prevention a safety program ever buys.

Definition

A toolbox talk is the short daily safety briefing before work starts, a few minutes on one topic, ladder safety, heat stress, fall protection, for the whole crew. A pre-task plan walks that day’s specific tasks, their hazards, and their controls. Both happen before the work and are logged in the daily record, making them leading indicators, measured activity that comes before an outcome, not after one.

A different topic, every day

Rotating through real hazards, not repeating one slide, is what keeps a toolbox talk from becoming background noise the crew tunes out.

Two tools, one morning

The toolbox talk sets the tone for the crew; the pre-task plan walks the actual work. Most mornings run both before the first task starts.

The pre-task plan is typically built from that task's job hazard analysis, and either moment is where the crew can raise stop-work authority if a hazard is not controlled.

How POD reads talks and plans

POD reads toolbox-talk counts from your daily records, gated to what you report, as a leading indicator beside the lagging rates. Pre-task plans are typically logged alongside the toolbox talk in that same daily record. POD does not run the talks or grade them.
