FieldReport

A daily log is one kind of field report. The category is much bigger, and most of what falls into it never waits for the end of the day.

Definition

A field report is any structured record from the field, a daily log, an inspection note, a safety observation, a progress update, or a photo set, that captures what happened where the work is. Individually these reports are raw observations; aggregated across a project, they become the project record everyone else works from.

Many reports, one record

A single jobsite produces several kinds of field report in a single day. Aggregated, they are the project record; left scattered, they are just noise in a truck. A superintendent’s daily log, an inspector’s note from the same morning, and a photo taken by a foreman during a delivery are three separate field reports about the same project on the same day, and none of them tells the full story alone. Only once they are pulled into one place does the day actually make sense to anyone reading it later.

Field report types, by when they happen

Only the daily log waits for the end of the day. Everything else is captured the moment it happens. That timing difference matters more than it looks: an inspection note written the moment a check fails carries details a same-day summary will have already forgotten, and a safety observation logged within minutes of a near miss is far more useful than one reconstructed at the end of the shift.

Field report typeCaptured when
Daily logOnce per day, whole site
Inspection noteAt the moment of a check
Safety observationRight after it happens
Photo setWhenever conditions matter

The scheduled version of this category is the daily construction report, and the formal check version is a construction inspection.

How POD handles it

POD reads field reports, daily logs, inspection notes, and photos from the field and structures them into the project record. The field report is the raw material POD turns into intelligence.

Frequently asked questions

One type of field report is a formal check

When the field report is a check against drawings, specs, or code rather than an observation, it becomes a construction inspection. That distinction, observation versus formal check, is also what determines whether a failure becomes an informal note to fix later or a recorded non-conformance that follows the project forward.
