How TRIR works
TRIR = (recordable cases × 200,000) ÷ hours worked. The 200,000 is 100 full-time workers over a 40-hour, 50-week year, so the rate reads per 100 workers.
What's a good rate
The U.S. construction average TRIR was about 2.3 in 2024 (BLS), down from 2.4 the year before. Under the average is good; top contractors run well below 1.0.

Questions & answers
TRIR = (total recordable cases x 200,000) / total hours worked. The 200,000 multiplier represents 100 full-time employees working 40 hours a week for 50 weeks, so the rate reads as incidents per 100 workers per year. DART and LTIR use the same formula with DART cases and lost-time cases.

TRIR, DART and LTIR use the OSHA recordkeeping formula: recordable cases multiplied by 200,000, divided by hours worked. The EMR figure here estimates the ratio of actual to expected losses; your official Experience Modification Rate is set by NCCI (or your state bureau) from a three-year loss history. The construction TRIR benchmark is the BLS SOII national average for 2024 (2.3, down from 2.4 in 2023), a directional figure, not a target for your trade or region — BLS does not publish a contractor-level distribution, so the comparison is to the industry mean, not a percentile.
